Being a 21st Century Public University

November 7 , 2005

Chancellor James Moeser, UNC

What does it mean to be a public university in the 21st century? In his presentation, Chancellor James Moeser engaged students in considering this question. UNC is among a small number of elite publics in the American higher education system. Among its counterparts, UNC enjoys a relatively high level of state support from appropriations and is comparatively a "best buy." Strategic priorities help the university maintain its national prominence in many academic areas, enhance its unique and powerful undergraduate learning environment, and engage its resources with the citizens of North Carolina and beyond. These three areas are considered the keys to maintaining UNC's status as a leading public university in the 21st century. They have been presented in both a letter and status report to incoming UNC system president Erskine Bowles.
