The charge of the UNC Board of Trustees may be summed up in three statements: promote the sound development of the University, advise the UNC System Board of Governors, and advise the Chancellor. But as Nelson Schwab, in his presentation, unbundled this neatly packaged charge, the immense work of the Trustees became very clear. Trustees are responsible for numerous aspects of campus life ranging from personnel policies to athletics oversight, to campus security and the master plan. As the Chair, Schwab has set five priorities for the Board. Central to all Trustee work is maintaining the quality of a Carolina education, followed closely by faculty retention, research, athletics, and the UNC funding model. The Trustees are also poised to assist the new system president, Erskine Bowles, in advancing the goals of both UNC-CH and the state’s system of higher education. |
