Public Service

September 12, 2005

Dr. Lynn Blanchard, Director
Carolina Center for Public Service

Concerts in Memorial Hall. Research into the cause of cystic fibrosis. UNC Dance Marathon. All of these actions are examples of public service conducted on the part of the University. Understanding and capturing the broad scope of this activity is part of what makes the job for Dr. Lynn Blanchard both challenging and extremely rewarding. As Blanchard’s presentation showed, UNC is one of many institutions participating in the national conversations around higher education and community engagement. She highlighted two recent initiatives that exemplify UNC’s efforts to lead in this area. The Public Service Scholars Program was created to recognize, support, and connect Carolina students in their service efforts. The Public Service Database serves as a centralized way for citizens to access information about the ways that UNC serves the state and beyond through its tripartite mission. These programs embody the ideal of being the “University of the people.”
