In a few years and for less than $50, we may be able to access the complete holdings of the Library of Congress through a device that fits in our palms. Through his presentation, Dr. Dan Reed engaged the class in considering both the challenges and opportunities that accompany the rapid technological advances of the 21st century. UNC and other universities are actively thinking about the implications of information technology on their traditional societal roles such as leadership training, economic development, and knowledge transfer. Although Herbert Simon warns that "a wealth of information creates a poverty of attention," the attention of great American universities will undoubtedly be captured by the numerous issues around information technology for years to come. In fact, UNC is currently solidifying plans to update its IT system in order to more effectively manage knowledge that is both created by and needed by the University. The cost is estimated at $200 million. |
