UNC GRADUATE SEMINAR

FALL 2005

UNC Reli 299/055

Subjects for Reports on Subfields of Islamic Studies.
These reports, of about 20 minutes each, should be half devoted to an outline of the major topics and issues in the subfield, according to standard academic reference works.  The other half should be a discussion of a couple of cutting-edge examples of recent scholarship on that particular subfield.  The goal of each report is to provide an overview of the progress in this area of Islamic studies since the time of Hodgson. By the last week of the semester, a select bibliography with brief annotation, based on the presentation, should be sent to the instructor for posting on the web site, as an attached file in Microsoft Word or as a formatted web page (please include citations of encyclopedia articles that have been helpful to you in reconnoitering this topic). The goal is both to provide presenters with the opportunity to familiarize themselves with a topic of special interest to them, and to provide for colleagues and other visitors to this web site a useful overview of recent scholarship on this subject.
