English 12P links first-year composition with Philosophy 22, Introduction to Ethics. This semester we will learn about, think about, and write about some seminal theories of ethics and morality taken from Plato's Republic, Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, John Stuart Mill's Utilitarianism, and Immanuel Kant's Grounding for the Metaphysics of Morals. While examining these ideas, we will study elements of the writing process and the conventions of philosophical discourse, including advanced rhetorical forms, argumentation, analytical writing, and oral debate. | |
