Cultures of Reform
in Medieval and Early Modern Europe

Description:

Christians have often disagreed about ideal models and devotional styles for carrying out their beliefs. This seminar explores the ways different Christian collectivities have sought to reform their lives and the society around them. We will consider the call to monasticism and the ascetic life as well as the means of envisioning Jesus himself as a model for popular devotion. The overlap of religion and secular life and the experience of women in religion in Germany and Italy will provide a primary lens through which to develop the themes of reformed living in medieval and Early Modern Europe.
