Above all, I have learned that the opportunities for service are never-ending. While we tend to think of service in traditional hands-on and direct contexts, such as building a house for Habitat for Humanity or tutoring at a local school, all service organizations require help with behind-the-scenes work. Each person has a unique set of skills just waiting to become an asset to the right organization.
I chose this service placement for a few reasons. To begin with, I performed the service during my senior year at which point I felt that I had already had sufficient experience as a "volunteer". I was ready
to take on a more administrative role and see what it would be like to work for a non-profit agency. I was likewise drawn to the position as an International Studies major as it coincided perfectly with my academic course of study.
My service placement was with the Duke - UNC Rotary Center for International Studies in Peace and Conflict Resolution. My tasks were twofold: first, I maintained the Rotary Center website throughout the semester and worked on the addition of new features such as a Photo Gallery. Second, I was responsible for researching better ways to promote the Rotary Center World Peace Fellowship. As both of these tasks merely require a computer (and Dreamweaver), I was able to set my own volunteer hours outside of meetings with my supervisors. I started this volunteering with an APPLES course the fall semester of my senior year; however, I plan to continue my service throughout the spring semester until I graduate.
