COURSE DESCRIPTION
The goal of this course is to give students a broad understanding of the field of entrepreneurship and to introduce the important tools and skills necessary to create and grow successful new ventures. This course
has the same goal and can be taken as a substitute for BUSI 500, Intro to New Ventures and Entrepreneurship. Whereas in BUSI 500 students learn from the perspective of writing a business plan (make your
own mistakes), in BUSI 506 Business Plan Analysis, students learn from the perspective of analyzing business plans from other entrepreneurs (learn from their mistakes).
The class will include many guest speakers. Entrepreneurs will come to class to share their “war stories” and to answer questions about their business plans. Entrepreneurial investors (venture capitalists,
angels, venture bankers, etc.) will come to class to discuss their analytical process for evaluating new ventures.
Students will learn how to recognize opportunity, mitigate risk, assess feasibility, utilize limited resources and assemble a winning team. With these tools, you will be equipped to make better decisions about
creating your own new ventures when you recognize a viable opportunity.
ASSIGNMENTS AND ACTIVITIES
Classroom Participation (20%)
This is an interactive class. Your participation is integral. The assignments and readings are specifically designed to help you prepare for fun, engaging class discussions. Attendance is mandatory. More than TWO
absences from class will result in a severe penalty.
VC and Angel Investing Quiz (10%)
This will be a multiple choice and short answer quiz to ensure you understand VC terminology and simple entrepreneurial financing math.
Entreprenopoly Team Exercise (10%)
In the Entreprenopoly team exercise, students will be assigned to teams playing the role of angel investment groups doing due diligence on real business plans. The event will be
spread over four class periods. Before the first class, students will read two business plans. We will discuss the plans in the first class. In class two, the entrepreneurs will come to campus to
“pitch” just as if they were pitching to investors, and each team will have 15 minutes with each entrepreneur to ask questions. In the third class period, each team will have 15 minutes to
negotiate a deal with the entrepreneur. In the fourth class period we will discuss the lessons learned through the exercise. Entreprenopoly is a derivative of TEAM-UP: www.team-up.info.
Analytical Briefs (20%)
In addition to Entreprenopoly, we will have three guest entrepreneurs share their business plans with us. You will be required the read business plans and
turn in a one-page analytical brief (template will be provided) at the beginning of the class period in which the entrepreneur is scheduled to speak.
Final Entreprenopoly and Analytical Write-Up (40%)
For this Entreprenopoly Exercise you will use everything you have learned throughout the semester. The format will be one extended class period
(during final exam time). You will be graded on your participation as perceived by the instructor, the entrepreneur, guest judges and by your teammates. In preparation for the event, each student will write one
analytical short paper (400 words maximum, double-spaced) analyzing the Final Entreprenopoly business plan. The write-up is 20% and participation in Entreprenopoly is 20%.
