Composition, Film, and the Differently Abled

English 102 courses provide students with a working knowledge of the rhetorical approaches, discourse languages, and value systems which distinguish writing in academic fields as diverse as biology, business, and the humanities.

Some English 102 classes add another component, a topical thread woven throughout the course's discussion of style, voice, and audience. For section 71, that thread will be an examination of our culture's posture towards those with physical, intellectual, and psychiatric disabilities.

Unit 1 will consider the course and consequences of disabilities from a bio-medical perspective. Unit 2 will explore how advertising companies configure disability issues to sell a movie. Unit 3 will look at how modern films challenge or perpetuate pervasive prejudices concerning those with various disabilities.
