Web Assignment # 1

  

Objective 9: Identify nursing organizations represented on the Worldwide Web and the organizations' research missions.

The purpose of this two-part Web assignment is to give you the opportunity to explore nursing research on the Worldwide Web and assess its relevance to your practice. Please post the assignment to your group's discussion board no later than midnight on Tuesday, September 7.

Part I:

  1. First review the Web site and identify any information that relates to research. This might include evidence-based projects, support for research through small grants, research-based meetings, or call for research abstracts for annual meetings.
  2. Go to the electronic journals page on the UNC library page and  look at the journal of the organization and determine the extent to which the journal publishes research.

In your small discussion groups briefly discuss the following questions.

  1. Identify the organization you evaluated.
  2. Discuss what you found.
  3. BRIEFLY analyze the strengths or limitations of this organization's focus on research.
  4. Discuss ways in which this organization might enhance their focus on research to meet the needs of practicing nurses more effectively.

Go to the National Institute of Health, National Institute of Nursing Research web site:

Study the Web site carefully including News and Information, Nurse Researchers in the News Nursing Research, New Directions for the 21st Century, and list of grants funded.

In your small discussion groups briefly describe an aspect of what you found, such as the mission, goals and funding, or the future directions of NINR, and discuss it within the context of your own nursing practice.
