Exemption Test for JOMC 50
JOMC 50 Course Content:
JOMC 50 "Electronic Information Sources," introduces students to in-depth research in an Internet-savvy environment. The course covers a wide range of information sources (Library of Congress listings, electronic databases, CD-ROMs, Lexis-Nexis, government resources, the World Wide Web and other Internet sources). Students also acquire a working knowledge of the Internet and learn HTML to create their own Web pages. See the online course syllabus at http://www.unc.edu/courses/jomc050/ for more details.
Purposes of the JOMC 50 Exemption Test:
1. To determine if a student knows the material that would be covered in the course.Who can take the JOMC 50 Exemption Test?
2. To evaluate a student's potential to apply knowledge of the material in journalism and mass communication courses.
3. To assess the student's current knowledge of research approaches, search strategies and electronic resources that are covered in the course.
1. Any JOMC student who is confident that he or she knows the material that would be covered in the course. (See the online syllabus at http://www.unc.edu/courses/jomc050/ for more details about the JOMC 50 course content.)How to Take the JOMC 50 Exemption Test:
2. Any JOMC student who has taken and passed with at least a C, a course similar to JOMC 50 at another institution.
3. Students may take the JOMC 50 Exemption Test only once
1. The student should write a brief statement specifying one or both of the following:
a) Details of similar or related courses taken, if any, that covered the same material covered by JOMC 50. This should include the course name, a brief description, name of the institution, term the course was taken, and grade received.Send your statement to the JOMC-50 insructor listed on the page: http://www.unc.edu/courses/jomc050/b) Background information about how, when, where and in what capacity the student learned the material covered in the course.
Content of the JOMC 50 Exemption Test:
Students must pass ALL parts of the test to be exempted from JOMC 50.1. A Treasure Hunt assignment.
The student must score at least 35 out of 50 to pass.
This tests a student's expertise with Lexis-Nexis, U-Search, electronic databases, and searching the World Wide Web for mass communication and journalism-related information.
Time allotment for this part of test: Three hours of library and Internet search.
Test format: Take-home assignment.2. The URL for the student's Web site.
The student must score at least 35 out of 50 to pass.
This tests a student's knowledge of HTML, hypertext and Web-page design.
Time allotment for this part of test: Not applicable.
Test format: Just give us the URL of your Web page.3. A multiple-choice test
A multiple-choice test on search strategies, Internet history and concepts.
The student must score at least 35 out of 50 to pass.
This tests a student's knowledge of library resources, information search strategies, Internet history and concepts.
Time allotment for this part of test: One hour.
Test format: Closed-book, multiple-choice test.Evaluation of the JOMC 50 Exemption Test:While the instructor of JOMC 50 may be assigned to evaluate the student's performance in the JOMC 50 Exemption Test, the final decision would rest with the Associate Dean.
Appeal Process for JOMC 50 Exemption Test Decisions:The student has the right to appeal his or her score on the JOMC 50 Exemption Test by talking with the instructor of JOMC 50. If not satisfied, the student may submit an appeal in writing with the assignment or project in question to the instructor, who will respond to the student's appeal. If the student is not satisfied by the answer, the student may then appeal to the Associate Dean. There is no further appeal.
