Grading

Evaluating information and information gathering is in many ways a subjective process. It is also an extremely important one, however, and we have designed a variety of projects and assignments which we feel will help you suceed both in this course and in your other classes as well. For further details on each assignment, please consult the syllabus in the Dead Tree Edition.
Your final grade will be computed on a 500 point scale, broken down as follows:
  • Submit your own exam questions: 10 points
  • Attendance: 20 points
  • Treasure Hunt: 70 points
  • Web pages: 80 points
  • First Test: 100 points
  • Second Test: 100 points
  • Final Exam: 120 points

All projects are due at the beginning of class on the day of the assigned date, unless otherwise noted. Late projects will be penalized. If you know ahead of time you will be unable to complete an assignment on time, please let me know.

How Projects Are Graded
The purpose of this class is to get comfortable using a number of essential information gathering tools, resources and strategies. While each assignment will be evaluated on a variety of criteria that are specific to that project, there are a few overall areas that will be applied to all coursework:

  • Information sources you select should be appropriate
  • All projects should be free of inaccuracies
  • Projects should demonstrate some originality
  • No misspellings! You will get hammered for this, just like in any other journalism class.
For more details, please consult the syllabus in the Dead Tree Edition.
