The Research Topic Triangle
The Research Topic Triangle illustrates how a broader topic can be focused by adding keywords to concentrate upon a specific area.

Notice that the first topic, "Moviemaking," is too broad for a simple paper -- you can write volumes about it, but probably don't have time. The addition of the keyword "early" narrows your topic a bit, and "in the U. S." (or, "in the United States) narrows it further. However, too many keywords might narrow your search too far; you might have difficulty interesting most readers with a discussion of early moviemaking equipment in the U. S. invented by Chuck Williams (If you can find the material in the first place). Here's how to focus your research ideas:

Step 1: Start with a broad idea.

Step 2: Add keywords to narrow the scope of your research.

Step 3: Is your narrow topic beyond the understanding of an average mind? If so, broaden it.
