Carnegie Community Engagement Classification
UNC-Chapel Hill Recognized as a "Community-Engaged University"
In 2006, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill applied for the
elective classification in community engagement of the Carnegie
Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. There are three categories
of the classification: "Curricular engagement," which entails engaging students
and faculty with the community; "outreach and partnership," which combines
the application and provision of institutional resources to mutually benefit
the campus and the community, such as research and economic development;
and a category that combines both aspects.
In December of 2006 UNC was granted classification as a "community-engaged
university." Carolina was one of 62 institutions in the country that
met the requirements for the combined category. This classification recognizes
Carolina's continual collaborations with the community and our commitment
to fostering community service among students, faculty and staff.
