With the help of a 2005 Seagraves Student Orgainzation Grant, and in partnership with the women and children residents of the Inter-Faith Council's Project HomeStart, Nourish International created a sustainable vegetable garden and provided residents with the skills and knowledge to maintain the garden as a supplemental nutritional source.

Seagraves Service Grants for Student Organizations

The Seagraves Service Grants for Student Organizations are available to all officially recognized UNC-Chapel Hill student organizations to support public service projects in North Carolina. Through the generosity of an alumnus, grants of up to $300 are awarded from a pool of $3,000. The program is named in honor of Mildred Yeager Seagraves, grandmother of the donor. Funds may be requested for any costs associated with the proposed service project, including supplies, travel, equipment, and other related programming expenses. Proposals are requested in the fall semester for projects to be completed by the end of the same academic year.

Application Process:

The call for proposals for the 2009-2010 grant process is now closed. Organizations that applied will be notified of their status by November 2, 2009.

Guidelines for submission:

All officially recognized student organizations (undergraduate and/or graduate) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are eligible to apply. Grants must be written and administered by a student in the student organization (not a staff member or collaborator). Student organizations may apply for only one grant per committee or subgroup. Student organizations that have received Seagraves Grants in the past may apply for funding for new projects only. If you are not a recognized student organization but are interested in becoming one, see the Carolina Union’s, “Office of Student Activities and Organizations” website here.

Preference will be given to:

  • Discrete service projects (rather than funding a part of a whole)
  • Projects located outside of UNC’s campus (particularly those outside of Orange County)
  • Projects that focus on advocacy and/or community organizing
  • Projects that do not have additional monetary support

  • We will not support fund-raising events.

Recipients are selected with input from students, community members, and staff.
