A Helping Hand - Dedicated to helping the elderly and persons with disabilities by providing meals, friendship, housekeeping, and yard work. Location - Chapel Hill (D Bus)

 

Ackland Art Museum(UNC) -Hosts gallery tours and workshops for schools and community groups. Location - Chapel Hill (U Bus)

 

Adolescent Parenting Program, Orange County Department of Social Services(Orange County) Serves pregnant and parenting teens under the age of 18. The program's goals include helping young parents remain in school and delay second pregnancies, teaching parenting skills, and reducing child abuse. Volunteer mentors over the age of twenty are matched with participants to spend time with them individually on a weekly basis, and assist participants in reaching their goals. Location - Chapel Hill (A Bus)

 

Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program of NC - a United Way organization that helps individuals, groups, and communities to begin programs to prevent adolescent pregnancy. Also researches to develop efficient ways for prevention. Works on local, regional, and statewide levels. Location - Chapel Hill (NS Bus)

 

Advocates for Sexual Assault Prevention (ASAP) (UNC) - A collective group of women and men united in an effort to promote the prevention of sexual assault. Location - Campus

 

Alcohol/Drug Council of NC - A United Way organization that whose mission is to help those who are addicted to alcohol and/or drugs and their families. Works with North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services to provide toll free substance abuse information. Location - Durham

 

All Kinds of Minds(UNC)(National) - Provides programs, tools, and a common language for parents, educators, and clinicians to help students with differences in learning achieve success in the classroom and in life. Founded in 1995, All Kinds of Minds is a private non-profit Institute, affiliated with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, that offers a powerful system of programs for helping kids succeed.

 

Alliance of AIDS Services Carolina (Statewide) - The Alliance mission is to serve people living with HIV/AIDS, their loved ones, caregivers and communities at large, through compassionate and non-judgmental care, prevention, education and advocacy.

Alpha Phi Omega Co-Ed National Service Fraternity - Dedicated to friendship, leadership, and service. Members do service for various organizations, as well as hold fundraisers for local charities. Location - Campus

 

America Reads - Strives to increase the reading levels of local children in grades Pre-K through 5, increase university students' involvement in the community and strengthen the partnership between the university community. Location - Chapel Hill (A Bus)

 

American Lung Association of NC (Statewide) - The American Lung Association of North Carolina provides education, advocacy, research, and services to reduce lung disease. We focus on air quality, smoking prevention and cessation, and asthma management, research and education. MANY volunteer and internship opportunities available year-round.

 

American Red Cross, Triangle Area Chapter (Triangle) - A humanitarian organization led by volunteers that provides relief to victims of disasters and helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. Location - Raleigh

 

American Red Cross Club of UNC-CH - Student organization that aims to represent the mission of the American Red Cross on campus. Targets needs in the community with six committees: Biomedical Services, Health and Safety, Community Outreach, HIV/AIDS, Marketing, and Fundraising. Location - Campus

 

American Social Health Association - Dedicated to improving the health of individuals, families, and communities with a focus on preventing sexually transmitted diseases and their harmful consequences. Location - Research Triangle Park

 

Amigos de las Americas(National) - Facilitates opportunities for U.S. high school and college students to volunteer in ongoing community health projects throughout Latin American.

 

Amnesty International - Works to protect and promote human rights through fundraising for human rights causes, general education and direct government lobbying. Location - Campus

 

Animal Protection Society of NC - Promotes respect for all creatures, prevention of cruelty to animals, and relief of animal suffering. Finds good homes for abused animals. Controls population of unwanted animals through low-cost spaying and neutering. Location - Mebane

 

APPLES Service Learning Program (UNC) - On-campus organization that engages students, faculty, and other community partners in service-learning partnerships that address social concerns and the needs of North Carolina communities. Location - Campus

 

ARC - Works with and for people who have a developmental disability as well as promoting full participation in the community through advocacy, education, and collaboration. ARC offeres respite as well as adult, toddler, and vocational programs. Location - Chapel Hill (D Bus)

 

Area Health Education Centers (AHEC)(Statewide) - Provides educational opportunities in academic institutions, healthcare agencies, and other organizations committed to improving the health of the people of North Carolina. Location - Chapel Hill (T Bus)

 

Artspace - A non-profit visual art center dedicated to presenting quality exhibitions and educational programs with an open studio environment. Artspace provides three galleries for exhibitions, education, and outreach programs for children and adults and has 35 working artists readily available to the public. The facility is free and open to the public five days a week and one evening each month for First Friday Gallery Walks. Location - Raleigh

Best Buddies(International) - An international organization that pairs college students with developmentally disabled adults in the community.

 

Big Brother Big Sister(National) - A nationwide youth-service organization that works to create and nurture relationships between children and adult mentors.

 

Blue Ribbon Mentor-Advocate(Chapel Hill, Carrboro) - A comprehensive support program for students in the Chapel Hill - Carrboro City Schools. The group provides students with mentoring, tutoring, advocacy, enrichment, leadership training, and scholarship support services. Location – Carrboro (CM)

 

Botanical Gardens (UNC) Location - Chapel Hill (FCX)

 

BoysCamp(Forsyth, Rockingham Counties) - Provides guidance to boys in need through positive outdoor experiences that open doors to personal growth. Location - Triad Area

 

Burwell School Historic Site - The Burwell School is a historic house museum located in Hillsborough, NC that preserves and interprets the history of its antebellum and Civil War era residents. The Burwell School Historic Site offers docent-led and self-guided tours, a variety of cultural events, and engaging and innovative heritage education programs for children and young adults. We are always looking for volunteers who are excited about history, especially women's and African-American history, to be docents and to work with children. Location - Hillsborough

Campus Y (UNC) - A department in UNC's Division of Student Affairs, the Campus Y is dedicated to the "pursuit of social justice through the cultivation of pluralism." Location - Campus

 

Camp Carefree - Asummer camp that serves children with chronic illnesses and disabilities. Also strives to provide a normal camp environment through dedicated volunteers. Location - Stocksdale

 

Carnivore Preservation Trust - Breeds and cares for over 240 animals from endangered species of carnivores across the world. Volunteers provide veterinary care, fund raising, public relations, and legal issues. Works with organizations in the community to educate the public on endangered species. Location - Pittsboro

 

Carolina Biodiesel, LLC - The first non-profit biodiesel company in the Triangle and operates B100 stations apart of a Community Coop Trail and services truck fleets of many green businesses. We are collecting fryer oil from local restaurants and producing biodiesel to be used locally, creating a decentralized, local, sustainable energy project. Carolina Biodiesel is an innovator in community based, alternative energy and transportation systems.



 

Carolina Campus Civitan(UNC) - A service organization at the campus level with a focus in helping individuals with developmental disabilities. Location - Campus

 

Carolina Cancer Focus(UNC) - Strives to raise awareness about the disease itself including methods of prevention and interaction with patients and their families. Location - Campus

 

Carolina Donor Service - Strives to save and improve lives through commitment to increase organ and tissue donation. CDS has a volunteer program that has helped increase awareness of organ and tissue donation for the general public through public awareness education. Location - Durham

 

Carolina Environmental Student Alliance(UNC) - A meeting ground for the campus and community to unite in connecting different disciplines of thought, study and action through the common goal of environmental awareness. Location - Campus

 

Carolina H.E.E.L.S.(UNC) - Brings children of diverse backgrounds onto the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus and gives them the opportunity to participate in leadership building activities. Location - Campus

 

Carolina for Kibera(UNC) - Helping to develop several local community based organizations (CBOs) in Kibera, the largest slum in East Africa. Location - Campus

 

Carolina Law Pro Bono Program (UNC) - Matches law students with practicing attorneys across the state to work on cases that the attorneys have taken for free or reduced rates. Location - Campus

 

Carolina Speakers Bureau (UNC) - A program that sends University faculty and administrators across the state to speak before community groups. Location – Campus (Walking Distance)

 

Carolina STRIDES - A Student Taught Reading Integrated Diversity Education System (STRIDES) which promotes attention towards diversity-related issues. Taught by students of UNC-Chapel Hill and serves not only the students at local elementary, middle, and high schools, but teachers as well. Organizes an annual high school unity summit for students to discuss contemporary diversity issues. Location - Campus

 

Carolina V-Day Intitiative(UNC) - A campus group aimed at raising awareness of violence against women through campus wide programs and an annual production of Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues. Location - Campus

 

Carolina Women's Center(UNC) - Celebrates women as shapers of the world, promoting an equitable and empowering environment through education, support, advocacy and diversity. Location - Chapel Hill (Walking Distance)

 

Chapel Hill/Carrboro City Schools - Community Schools Program - Develops improvement plans, fundraisers, and parent and community involvement in the local school through organizations and programs like Volunteers and Partners for Education, PTA Thrift Shops, and School Governance Committees. Also supports and funds teacher rewards and incentives. Location - Depends on School Location

 

Chapel Hill/Carrboro YMCA - Strives to strengthen and unite the people of the community through fun programs, leadership, and Christian values. Many activities for children including swim team, swim lessons, and other sports teams. Location - Chapel Hill (A,G)

 

Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership - Is responsible for revitalizing Downtown Chapel Hill, and we are currently looking for volunteers in three areas: Welcome Committee (to help visitors with directions, etc), Clean & Green Team (planting flowers, litter removal) and Safety Educators (distribute personal and community safety materials). The Partnership is also working to develop a more environmentally sustainable community. Location - Chapel Hill (Walking Distance)

 

Chapel Hill Jaycees - An organization for young people ages 21-40. Provides opportunities for business networking, personal growth, leadership development and social interaction. Also helps local communities by volunteering time to assist those in need. Current priority projects include the Duke Cancer Center, NC Jaycee Burn Center, and Boys and Girls Home. Location - Chapel Hill (G)

 

Chapel Hill Service League(Chapel Hill) - A women's volunteer organization whose purposes are to interest its members in educational and charitable needs of the community; to provide means and opportunities for members to render services to the community in these areas; to educate members and others concerning community needs and to encourage benevolent and charitable work; and to foster community responsibility. Location - Chapel Hill

 

Chatham Social Health Council - Through education, advocacy, and support, the Chatham Social Health Council strives to prevent HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases in Chatham County. The Council utilizes volunteers to provide outreach, administrative support, and assist in program planning. Location - Pittsboro

 

Child Care Services Association(National) - Through research, services and advocacy, CCSA works to improve the child care system in our local communities of Durham and Orange counties, throughout the state of North Carolina and across the United States. Location - Chapel Hill (D Bus)

 

Child Family Health International (CFHI) (International) - Brings service-learning into hospitals and clinics around the world, allowing participants to gain insight on the contextual constructs of illness and healing in foreign settings. Program Alumni return from the host country with new perspectives on healthcare systems and delivery in places where resources and supplies are extremely limited.

 

Children's Home Society of NC(Statewide) - Dedicated to promoting the right of every child to a permanent, safe and loving home. Their highly trained and experienced counselors help facilitate the adoption process for thousands of women and help birth mothers make decisions with confidence. Location - Greensboro

 

Circle K International (International) - Devoted to involving college and university students in campus and community service while developing quality leaders and citizens. Location - Campus

 

CLAWS,Inc. - A local non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing exotic species for which there are no other rescue organizations; rehabilitating native wildlife, with a special emphasis on white tailed deer; and outreach programs to educate our commnuity about the animals that we share our planet with. Location - Chapel Hill

 

Club Nova Thrift Shop - Non-profit shop selling clothing, books, housewears, and gifts. All proceeds benefit Club Nova, a rehabilitation clubhouse serving more than 200 adults living with severe persistant mental illness. Location - Carrboro (J)

 

Communities in Schools - Dedicated to helping students learn more effectively, stay in school, and prepare for life through gifts of materials, services, ad funds. Provides mentoring and tutoring. Distributes used computers to students. Organizes after school programs. Location - Chapel Hill (Walking distance)

 

Communities in Schools of Durham - Founded to target and eliminate the problems that prevent Durham's youth from successfully completing high school. We organize programs that alleviate issues at home that prevent a student from focusing on school, such as hunger, and also draw the community into schools by recruiting tutors and mentors so that every child can have a positive and adult influence in their life. Location - Durham

 

Communiversity(UNC) - Youth programs designed to empower local children to become advocates for positive change by exposing them to the University, its opportunities and facilities. Location - Campus

 

Cornucopia House - Provides a nurturing environment where patients, families, and others can gather to share and receive support, resources, and education to cope with cancer. Open to everyone and provided free of charge. Services compliment traditional medicine and serve anyone touched by cancer at any time along the journey. Location - Chapel Hill (D)

 

Covenant with North Carolina's Children (Statewide) - A coalition advancing public policy to benefit North Carolina children.

 

Cross Cultural Solutions (International) - Sends volunteers abroad to work in the areas of health, education, and social services with Volunteer and Intern Programs in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Programs offer a unique opportunity for participants to work side-by-side with local people, on locally designed and driven projects. Volunteer programs are designed to facilitate hands-on service and cultural exhange in the aim of fostering cultural understanding.

 

Cumberland Trail Conference (National) - Dedicated to completing the 300+ mile Cumberland Trail from Chattanooga, Tennessee, north to the Cumberland Gap at the Tennessee-Kentucky-Virginia line. Volunteers - many of them college studnets - have built more than 145 miles to date, preserving greenways and protecting scenic watersheds along eastern escarpment of the Cumberland Plateau.

 

Cystic Fibrosis Friends (UNC) - A student-led organization sponsored by UNC-Chapel Hill and UNC Hospitals. The program offers companionship to cystic fibrosis patients, while helping fight the disease through fund-raising. Location - Campus

Dance Marathon(UNC) - An annual effort to raise funding and support for the NC Children's Hospital. With work going on throughout the year, the culminating event is a 24 hour celebration of dance, diversity and fun held in the spring. Location - Campus

 

Dispute Settlement Center, Inc. - Provides free mediation for disputes such as separation and divorce cases, juvenile victims, and multi-party group disputes. Also provides youth programs and training. Location - Carrboro (CW)

 

Duke University Medical Center - Provides opportunities for volunteers who are interested in volunteering. You can read to patients, rock babies in the nursery, offer to support cancer and heart patients, work in gift shops, be a host or hostess in a hospital waiting room, assist patients and families in the ER and much more! Location - Durham

 

Durham Art's Coucil's CenterFest - With 52 years of history as an anchor for cultural life in Durham, Durham Arts Council creates community through the active involvement of artists, teachers, students, business partners, friends and donors. We invite you to engage in the arts each day and join us in our mission of promoting excellence in an access to the creation, experience and active support of the arts for all the people of our community. Location - Durham

 

Durham Crisis Repsonse Center -The only agency in Durham dedicated to providing free and confidential services to survivors of domestic and sexual violence. These programs all seek to support the DCRC mission to work with the Durham community to end domestic and sexual violence through advocacy, support, education and prevention. Location - Durham

 

Durham County Teen Court and Restitution Program - Gives middle and high school students an opportunity to volunteer in various courtroom roles. Also, places youth in different community organizations to perform court-ordered community service.

 

Durham's Partnership for Children (Durham County) - An organization created to mobilize and unify the Durham community to create and support innovative and successful approaches to serving the needs of children 0-5 and their families. Location - Durham

Early Childhood LINK - Provides training, consultation, and assistance to children (age birth to 5) with low-incidence disabilities like visual impairment, autism, and deafness. Also helps educate families about these disabilities.Location - Campus

 

Economic Development, Office of(UNC) - Coordinates and publicizes activities already being performed by UNC-CH faculty, staff and students, and creates, monitors and documents new programs that will assist local, state, regional and national governments, non-governmental organizations, and private enterprises to create jobs and wealth." Location - Campus

 

Empowerment Project - Helps independent producers by providing facilities, training, and support. Works to put the power of the media in the hands of individuals working for the good of mankind. Produces documentaries and films, conducts workshops, and operates a media center with low-cost supplies. Location - Chapel Hill

 

Episcopal Campus Ministries(UNC) - An Anglican and Episcopal college student youth group at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that offers a cornucopia of opportunities for service and outreach, including Habitat for Humanity, as well as group building retreats and mission trips. Location - Campus

 

Ethnicity, Culture, and Health Outcomes (ECHO) (UNC) - The mission of ECHO, the UNC Program on Ethnicity, Culture, and Health Outcomes, is to eliminate health status and health outcomes disparities through translatable, evidence-based research, multidisciplinary training and education, and culturally sensitive service to North Carolina communities. Location - Campus

 

Exchange Clubs' Family Center of Durham(Durham County) - Supports parents and teachers in the hard work of helping children succeed. Volunteers can help parents learn about child development, discipline, problem solving, and community resources. Location - Durham

Family Health Ministries - Dedicated to helping individuals, families, and communities in need help themselves in culturally relevant ways. Also, the organization supports programs in maternal and child health, and education and church development in Haiti, Africa, Guatemala, and North Carolina. Volunteer opportunities include mission trips to Haitian communities. Local opportunities include participating on the advisory board as well as supporting local fundraising projects. Location - Durham

 

Family Support Network of NC - Promotes and provides support for families with children who have special needs. This family-to-family peer support is available through local, affiliated Family Support Network programs across the state and through the Central Directory of Resources.Also, promotes and provides family support through its family support services; education and outreach activities; research and evaluation; and other projects. Location - Carrboro (CW)

 

Family Violence Prevention Center of Orange County, Inc.(Orange County) - Works to prevent and end family violence through community education and provision of direct services including emergency assistance, case management, and court advocacy. Location - Chapel Hill (walking distance)

 

Food Bank of North Carolina (Statewide) - Provides food for people who are hungry in 34 counties in central and eastern North Carolina. From 2000-2001, the Food Bank distributed more than 22 million pounds of food to 800+ partner agencies such as soup kitchens, food pantries and shelters.

 

Forests of the World, LLC - A small, handicraft import company based in Durham, devoted to biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. We work in some of the world's most biologically diverse areas, assuring that the people with whom we work are paid fairly, have safe working conditions and produce their products from sustainable, renewable materials. We sell to stores around the world and our proud of the role we play in educating consumers about these important issues.

 

Freedom House Recovery Center - Helps individuals recover from substance addiction and build a new and better life. Provides services of detoxification, acute substance abuse stabilization, and halfway house for women. Location - Chapel Hill (A)

 

Friends of the Chapel Hill Senior Center - Provides support and help with programs, projects, and trips that promote wellness for the residents of the Chapel Hill Senior Center. Location - Chapel Hill (D)

Gay and Lesbian Help Online - The Gay and Lesbian Helpline serves the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities of the Triangle, providing non-judgmental peer counseling services, education, information, resource referrals, and documentation of bias crimes over the telephone. The Helpline is staffed Sunday through Thursday from 6:30pm to 9:30pm. Location - Raleigh

 

General Alumni Association: "Get Involved"(UNC) - Continue to reconnect with the University. The General Alumni Association offers great opportunities to get involved with the Carolina community. It doesn't matter if you live outside North Carolina or have limited free time, your General Alumni Association has just the program for you. Location - Campus

 

Global Service Corps (International) – Provides HIV/AIDS education and rural health clinic support in Tanzania and Thailand.

 

Global Volunteers (International) – Coordinates teams of short-term volunteers involved in international human and economic development activities.

 

GoAbroad.com (International) - Provides access to comprehensive international education and alternative travel databases. Search by selection area of specialty.

 

Greenway Transit, LlC - Greenway Transit is the first environmentally friendly transportation service on the east coast! Our mission is to provide a means of transportation in our community while minimizing our impact on our planet as a whole. Services include human-powered pedicabs to local, recycled, waste veggie oil, biodiesel buses.

Habitat for Humanity(UNC) - Contribute funds and volunteers to Orange County Habitat in an effort to eliminate substandard housing county-wide. Current work is concentrated in Efland, NC where a Habitat for Humanity community of 44 houses will be constructed over the next two years. Location - Campus

 

HEADs UP (UNC) - Through Health Education & Awareness on Diseases & Unhealthy Practices, UNC undergraduate students attend high schools in North Carolina and talk to students about disease prevention and healthy habits. HEADs UP’s mission is to educate students with facts concerning heart disease, which will help them make wise decisions on how to stay healthy and enforce early disease prevention.

 

Health for Habitat(UNC) - A partnership consisting of the University of North Carolina Schools of Pharmacy, Public Health, Dentistry and Medicine, who have combined their efforts at working with the community. They have partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Orange County and a Habitat Family to finance and construct homes in Orange County. Location - Campus

 

Heels on Housing - Founded for the purpose of addressing housing issues in the local community. Objectives are: to raise awareness of housing issues; to assist individuals and families facing difficulties with housing; and to unite various members of the UNC community. Also the umbrella organization for the UNC Law Habitat for Humanity group. Location - Campus

 

Heels on Wheels (UNC) - A UNC student group concerned by the large amounts of unused food items, both perishable and non-perishable, in the university community. With the purpose of getting otherwise wasted foods to those who need them, Heels on Wheels seeks to develop consistent, dependable programs that will reduce food waste and provide more meals for needy individuals in our community.

 

Hillsborough Exchange Family Center - Provides in home services to support families under stress, offers parenting classes and works to raise awareness about issues of child abuse and neglect. Volunteers may be trained to work directly with families, to assist with parenting classes or to help with community fairs and educational events sponsored by the center. Location - Hillsborough

 

Himalayan Health Exchange (International) - A humanitarian service program bringing together healthcare professionals who give of their time, talent, and resources to provide care to the underserved populations in select, remote areas of Indo-Tibetan Borderlands, India, and Nepal. Each trip combines service and adventure, with team members providing care while also experiencing the land, its natural environment, people, and culture.

 

Hunger Lunch(UNC) - Hunger Lunch is a new project on main campus working to collect funds throughout the year by serving a healthy, simple and inexpensive meal for $3 ALL YOU CAN EAT! 100% of the profits will support a nutritional project during the summer of 2002-2003, where we will personally go and build a sustainble source of food for a 3rd World community that is in dire need of better nutrition. Location - Campus

Imladris Dog Rescue - Advocates responsible animal ownership and public education. Emphasis on breed specific legislation and dog bite prevention. Finds responsible, loving homes primarily for animals targetted by canine breed specific legislation ("pit bulls", Doberman Pinschers, Rottweilers). Location - Campus

 

Insight Out (UNC) - A publication of students in the schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health and Social Work.  Created to recognize the community service work of UNC health professions students and faculty together with members of the community, while encouraging students to explore community service as a means of gaining the valuable human insight that is so essential to the art of health care. Location - Campus

 

Inspiration Theater (Statewide) - An innovative non-profit theater troupe with a heart for the community. The group performs uplifting/comic entertainment in residential health care facilities, such as hospitals, nursing homes, and mental healthcare centers.

 

Institute of Government (UNC) - The largest and most diversified university-based local government training, consulting, and research organization in the United States. Location - Campus

 

Institute of International Education (IIE) (International)- Contains information on over 5,000 international grants, fellowships, and short-term study programs for U.S. students and professionals. Programs and services encompass a wide range of activities in support of human resource development.

 

Inter-Faith Council for Social Service (Chapel Hill, Carrboro) - A caring organization that assists and supports people in need through staff-volunteer partnerships, congregations, individuals and community coalitions. They provide shelter, food, direct services, advocacy and information to people in need. (J Bus)

 

International Medical Volunteers Association (IMVA) (International)- Devoted to promoting voluntary medical activity in developing countries. Also advises medical professionals, administrators, and students on finding compatible international volunteer opportunities. The directory of Organization Profiles presents detailed information on dozens of humanitarian groups looking for medical expertise.

Lutheran Family Services - Helps to resettle 370 refugees fleeing persecution overseas each year. Supports newly arrived refugees through: location of housing, orientation to the community, employment assistance, English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, health screenings and medical check-ups, and school placements. Volunteers are needed as English tutors to transport refugees to appointments, assist with data entry, translate during appointments, and pick up donations. Pa'lante - Pa'lante is a Spanish-language youth media program that involves youth in promoting integration among Latin Am. immigrants and established communities in Orange Co. We produce Radio Pa'lante, a music an public affairs show airing live Fridays at 5 on Carrboro's WCOM 103.5fm. We also advocate for students' rights and produce community events. Population Fellows Program: Graduate Summer Internship Funding - Graduate students who have already secured internships in international population, family planning, and reproductive health can apply for funding through the Population Fellows Programs. Prevention Center - The Prevention Resource Center (PRC) in Montana places AmeriCorpsaVISTAs at project sites in community organizations across the state that are dedicated to preventing risky youth behaviors. The PRC works with groups like Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Boys and Girls Club, the YWCA, the Montana Tobacco Use Prevention Program, Helena Citizens Council, Youth Connections, and many other organizations who make it their mission to help communities establish long-term solutions to poverty by reducing child abuse and neglect, substance abuse, teen pregnancy, crime and violence, and school dropout rates.

 

Principal Directions Institute, Inc. - Specializes in financial literacy programs designed to improve economic self-sufficiency and wealth building. Project Rush Hour - Through Project Rush Hour, students can volunteer at the Inter-Faith
Crisis Center, an incredible organization in Carrboro that would not be possible without volunteers. Students work with members of our community who are unable to afford food or pay financial bills, such as rent, electricity and water. Our volunteers work at the IFC in shifts on Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon from 4-7, making it possible for the IFC to say open so that clients who are otherwise unable to make it can come after work or other responsibilities. Rainbow Soccer - A recreational community soccer program with emphasis on skill and sportsmanship. It is open to people of every age, sex, and ability. ReCYCLEry - A direct-service not-for-profit organization whose mission is to encourage the use of the bicycle as a mode of transportation and recreation. This mission is accomplished through hands-on still building where we teach people how to repair and maintain bicycles, salvaging bicycles and ensuring that anyone who needs a bicycle can earn one, and outreach to underserved communities with these services. Relay for Life - Represents hope that those lost to cancer will not be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer will be eliminated. RTI International/Substance Abuse Intervention and Treatment Evaluations - The mission of the RTI Substance Abuse Treatment Evaluations and Interventions (SATEI) program is to conduce high-quality, multidisciplinary research to evaluate substance abuse treatment and treatment processes and to develop and test interventions addressing health risk behaviors. Under the direction of Dr. Wendee Wechsberg, SATEI conducts epidemiologic, intervention, and evaluation studies to inform, develop, and test other high-risk and underserved populations in the community-based settings. Our studies are community based: we do outreach out in the community by contracting local humanitarian and social service organization to recruit study participants and we do outreach out in the community where we identify and recruit women for our studies.

 

Rural Enrichment Project (UNC)  - an innovative new program initiated by the Food Bank in partnership with UNC-Chapel Hill and funded by the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation. Special Olympics North Carolina (Statewide) - Provides year-round sports training and competition for more than 37,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities in communities throughout the state. It is one of the largest Special Olympics programs in the world in terms of athlete participation.

 

Special Olympics Orange County - Provides year-round sports training and competition to children and adults with intellectual disabilities in Orange County. More than 230 athletes participate in 11 various sports. Volunteers provide one on one coaching instruction for 1 hour per week for an 8-10 week season. Location - Chapel Hill (D Bus)

 

Spence's Farm - Spence's farm is a great way for kids to express their enthusiasm for nature and the outdoors, as well as stimulate their minds with alternative and disguised learning tools.We offer the group horse back riding, pottery and woodshop lessons. Kids are offered the opportunity to go trailblazing and fort building (attended of course!) in the woods behind Spences farm. Others may feed the animals in the hands-on barnyard. Our yard includes goats, chickens, ducks, pigs, rabbits, and often a few un-official guests (i.e. pigeons or snakes). We have also converted an old barn into a haymaze in which hay is stacked into four levels. The kids are encouraged to confront theirs fears, and learn a little something about bravery, by facing the haymaze without the assistance of a light source. SPH - IFC Kitchen Volunteers - Is a group of SPH students from all departments who volunteer once a month at the Inter-Faith Council shelter to cook or serve a meal to hungry and homeless people.

 

STANDUP FOR KIDS (Nationwide) - Was established to provide crisis intervention and basic survival necessities for at-risk and homeless youth through local outreach programs. We are an all-volunteer force whose on the streets outreach efforts find, stabilize and assist homeless and street kids in their efforts to improve their lives.

UNC-CH Project Openhand (UNC) - Provides for the nutritional needs of people living with HIV in Alamance, Chatham, and Orange Counties. Some of these needs include protein intake, vitamins, complex carbohydrates, and lower amounts of fats. Clients of this project receive specially-planned home delivered meals and basic nutritional education.

 

UNC Health Care - Improving health and treating disease across North Carolina. In addition to comprehensive medical, surgical and psychiatric care, UNC is a leader in health promotion and disease prevention. Specialized patient care services include the Breast Center, Cardiovascular Program, Diabetes Care Center, Lung Center, Rehabilitation Center, etc.. UNC Health Care extends beyond Chapel Hill and into the greater Triangle area through its network of primary care and specialty physician practices located in Orange, Wake, Durham, Chatham Lee, Vance and Alamance counties. Unite for Sight - Volunteers for UFS provide vision screenings, promote eye health education, and conduct glasses drives. Through the organization volunteers are able to connect underrepresented and underprivileged patients with the information needed to receive eye exams at reduced or no cost. Membership is open to all; those interested in any realm of health care, optometry, opthalmology, and social work may find the organizations level of patient contact useful.

 

Unifying Neighborhoods to Improve Today's Youth, Inc. (UNC) - Seeks to develop a sense of community within neighborhoods through the youth of that area. To acheive this goal physical activities are planned for the youth and facilitated by young adult voluneteers who serve as positive role models for the youth. The activities will benefit the children by providing an avenue to strenghten the community bond and introducing them to a healthful life-style at an early age. Location - Newark, NC

 

University Center for International Studies (UNC) - K-12 Outreach - Brings the world to North Carolina schools through educational speakers, programs, and performances that engage students in learning about other countries, cultures, and international current events. This service is offered to educators free of charge. Location - Campus

Victory Junction Gang Camp (Statewide) - Enriches the lives of children with chronic medical conditions or serious illnesses by providing life-changing camping experiences that are exciting, fun and empowering, in a safe and medically sound environment.

Vote for America (National)  - A nonpartisan organization dedicated to increasing voter knowledge and participation in elections. Vote for America mobilizes citizens into Pledge to Vote Drives that get more voters to the polls by making voting personal.

Women's Center (Triangle) - Supports Triangle area women in achieving their personal and professional goals through information, education, referral and support services. Location - Chapel Hill (U Bus)

 

World Camp for Kids (UNC)(International) - Enriches the lives of children in disadvantaged communities throughout the world. Fun, educational camps build each child's self-worth and encourage community pride by raising awareness about locally challenging issues through workshops and games.

 

World View (UNC) - Helps K-12 and college educators anticipate and respond to the challenges of this smaller, more interconnected world through outreach and sponsorship of seminars, symposiums and trips. Location - Campus

YES (Youth for Elderly Service) - is a committee of the Campus Y. We have a lot of exciting events coming up for this spring semester, and now is a perfect time to join! We work with four local nursing homes, and volunteering ranges from individual time that fits in your schedule, working in small groups, and monthly socials with all of the committee members. Our first social is coming up in which we will be celebrating Valentine's Day with flower and card deliveries.

 

Yield to Heels - Aims to clear up myths about traffic and pedestrians and provide useful information on pedestrian safety to the University community. Focuses on three messages for drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists: Be aware, be considerate, and be safe. Distributes informational materials regarding pedestrian safety twice a year at four crosswalk locations across campus. Location - Campus
