Service Scholars

Launched in 2003, the Public Service Scholars (PSS) program provides a framework for undergraduate students who want to strengthen and maintain their commitment to serving communities throughout North Carolina, the nation and the world. PSS encourages students to learn about and practice public service and engagement beyond the scope of traditional volunteerism, including organizational service, policy and advocacy work, fundraising and philanthropy. The program is open to all full-time undergraduate students with at least four semesters remaining at Carolina.

Program Goals

PSS aims to advance the University’s mission of service and engagement by:

  • Providing a structured plan for students to become deeply engaged in their communities
  • Fostering connections between the University, its students and the community and by sharing the breadth and scope of students' service to NC and beyond
  • Promoting student participation in varying dimensions of public service, including organizational, policy and philanthropy domains
  • Developing students' skills for quality public service
  • Recognizing students who perform outstanding service
