Promoting Change Through the Nonprofit Sector (PUBA 396-Fall)
Promoting Change Through the Nonprofit Sector is a unique opportunity through the Carolina Center for Public Service's Public Service Scholars program. The course is also made possible by the Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund and Campus Compact's Students4Giving initiative. This one credit hour course is designed to offer undergraduate students an opportunity to learn about the nonprofit sector and to promote change in local communities by working together to fundraise, design grant award criteria, solicit grant proposals and decide on recipient nonprofit agencies.
Philanthropy as a Tool for Social Change (HBHE 699-Spring)
Philanthropy as a Tool for Social Change is a three credit hour service-learning course offered through the Carolina Center for Public Service’s Public Service Scholars program and The SUNSHINE LADY Foundation's Learning By Giving Program. Through this course, students learn about and experience the process of awarding grants to local agencies. Students function as a committee and are responsible for researching the needs of North Carolina, designing grant award criteria, drafting and distributing a request for proposals, reviewing submissions, and awarding $10,000 to select community organizations. NOTE: this service-learning class is not approved to meet the Experiential Education (EE) requirement, nor is it a grant writing class.
Promoting Change Through the Nonprofit Sector - Global Giving (PUBA 396, Section 2-Spring)
Promoting Change Through the Nonprofit Sector – Global Giving is offered by the Carolina Center for Public Service's Public Service Scholars program. This course gives undergraduate students an opportunity to learn about the international nonprofit and philanthropic sectors. Students learn about the principles of traditional and non-traditional philanthropy and engage in giving and fundraising processes. Students research pressing global issues, identify legitimate international charitable organizations that address these issues, decide together which causes and organizations to support with $15,000 in GlobalGiving gift cards, and raise funds from their peers and extended networks. The tools and resources the students leverage as part of the course include the GlobalGiving website and online fundraising tools.
