Mission Statement

Seven different academic support programs come under the umbrella of Academic Services. They include: the Academic Support Program for Student Athletes, the Chemistry Tutorial Program, the Learning Center (which includes The Academic Success Program for Students with LD/ADHD), the Math Tutorial, the Summer Bridge Program, and the Writing Center. The mission of Academic Services is to provide an array of coordinated and collaborative learning opportunities which will assist students in becoming independent learners and achieving academic success. While each program has its own distinct purpose, each operates under the broad mission of diversifying and enhancing the educational experience for all students.

Goals and Objectives

Academic Services is an administrative unit that comes under the direction of an associate dean. The unit is responsible for:

1. Supervising the administration of seven educational support programs to ensure effective management and decision-making by the directors of each program. The objectives are:

  • to clarify and enforce university policies and procedures
  • to investigate, deal with, and resolve disputes and/or problems encountered by Academic Services directors, and when appropriate, their staffs
  • to meet regularly with directors on an individual basis for the purpose of keeping abreast of activities, accomplishments, problems, and challenges presented to the different units in Academic Services
  • to conduct on-site visits on a regular basis
  • to provide leadership through direct involvement and numerous university committees
  • to review, discuss, and analyze reports and statistical information

2. Informing and consulting with directors regarding pertinent issues and implementing appropriate responses to these changes. The objectives are:

  • to explore the advances in information technology, their impact on instructional support services, and how academic support services are delivered to students
  • to ensure that professionals in Academic Services are prepared to deal competently with technological changes that occur in the workplace
  • to examine ways to deal with future changes in enrollment that will address the needs of traditional as well as nontraditional college students

3. Identifying financial and human resources, as well as physical facilities, to address each unit's needs. The objectives are:

  • to request funding for various programs
  • to review, prepare, and submit operating budgets to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences for selected programs
  • to prepare annual reports and biweekly proceedings from selected programs
  • to interview and recommend potential candidates for staff openings

4. Presenting and leading sessions, discussions, and seminars to acquaint students, parents, faculty, staff, administrators, school personnel, and friends of the University with the mission, objectives, and successes of programs in Academic Services.

5. Disseminating information to the University community to promote instructional support services and programs available to students.

  • to advertise and promote services directly to students through various publications
  • to advertise materials about Academic Services at least twice each year to instructors, particularly to those who teach freshman courses
