Career Opportunities

"I am a fourth year medical student at the University of Louisville. I am in the process of applying and interviewing for a residency position in emergency medicine. I also wanted to say that the Applied Science program at UNC provides a wonderful background and a wealth of knowledge that helped me on the MCAT and in the basic science courses of med school. I think that the program is perfect for the ambitious, science-oriented student interested in a career in medicine."

                   --Jamie McCubbin, Class of 1995

Each line of study leads to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Applied Science. Recipients of this degree have gone into entry-level positions in a wide range of technological industries; wafer fabrication, computer hardware and software, pharmaceutical concerns, business fields, and the polymer industry. Students have also continued their studies at the graduate level. Graduate programs leading to the M.S., Ph.D., and M.D. degrees have been obtained by many of our graduates. Students who go on to the doctoral level pursue either an industrial or academic career. Through 1999, approximately three-quarters of the graduates from UNC Curriculum in Applied Sciences entered graduate and professional programs; e.g. chemistry, physics, biochemistry, materials science, electrical engineering, computer science, and biomedical engineering.

"Currently, I am selling dental implants and other oral rehab products for Sulzer Calcitek.... After four years of sales, I cannot say that I pull my BioChem book out every day. However, the material that I learned in the Materials Science track definitely comes in handy when discussing the mechanisms by which our products integrate with the body and when discussing the mechanical properties of our products.

"Finally, I realize that the purpose of your program is to develop 'scientists.' However, do not underestimate the quality learning experience that your program provides. Because of the program's difficulty and intensity, students must be motivated, intelligent, and must have a strong work ethic to graduate. These qualities all point towards continued success regardless of a students chosen career path. I think that this shows in the success of your alumni."
