Language Placement

Summer 2008/CTOPS Fall 2008

If you have any prior knowledge of an Asian language that you wish to study at UNC, you must take the placement test for that language. (This includes transfer students, who must take the placement test before continuing in the language, regardless of what transfer credit they have been awarded.) If you don't intend to take more courses in a language, but are seeking to use your prior knowledge of it to satisfy the foreign language requirement, you also must take the placement test.

Native speakers: If you are from a country where the language is spoken, and have had any of your formal education in that language, before seeking to take a placement test you should contact Dr. Fred Clark.

Summer placement at CTOPS: When it's time for placement testing at CTOPS, go with the orientation leader who has the Asian languages group. They will bring you to the Asian Studies office, where you will be able to take the placement test if it is available. If not, you will be able to sign up for the next time it will be given, and also get information on placement, registration for language classes, and any related questions you may have.

The Arabic placement test will be available at all CTOPS/TSOP sessions up through and including July 21-22. If you are attending a later session, see below to sign up for the fall test.

The Hebrew placement test will be available at all CTOPS/TSOP sessions.

The Japanese placement test will definitely be available at all CTOPS sessions up through and including June 16-17. It definitely will not be available at sessions from July 28 on. Between June 19 and July 24, the Japanese placement will be available at some sessions; exact dates are not yet determined.

Placement in Chinese, Hindi-Urdu, Korean, and Persian is not available during CTOPS/TSOP; please see below for information on the fall tests.

Fall placement: The following placement tests will be given on Monday, August 18, 2008 (the day before classes start for fall semester). You must register in advance for these tests; to do so, please contact Lori Harris, including your PID and which test you want to sign up for.

The Arabic placement test will be given from 3:15-5:15 in Hanes Art 215.

The Chinese placement test will be given from 9:30-11:00 in New West 219.

The Hebrew placement test will be given from 3:30-5:30 in New West 103.

The Hindi-Urdu placement test will be given from 3:30-5:00 in Hanes Art 116.

The Japanese placement test will be given from 3:30-5:30 in New West 219. You can also download this self-assessment guide, which will help you get an idea of what level you are at. You'll still need to take the placement test, though.

The Korean placement test will be given from 10:00-12:00 in Hanes Art 215. There are two different levels of the Korean test. If you have registered for KOR 101, please come to the 10:00 test. If you have registered for a higher level of Korean, or if you are taking the placement test in order to satisfy the language requirement, please come to the 11:00 test.

For placement in Persian, please contact Ms. Zari Kamarei .

To satisfy the language requirement through placement in any other Asian language that is not taught at UNC, please contact Dr. Fred Clark in Academic Services.
