Persian Persian (also known as Farsi) is the most widely spoken member of the Iranian branch of the Indo-Iranian languages. It is the language of Iran (formerly Persia) and is also widely spoken in Afghanistan. The language of the Epic of Kings, the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, and the metaphysical poet Rumi, Persian is a treasury of great world literature and culture. The Department of Asian Studies offers four semesters of instruction in Persian, giving students the opportunity to fulfill foreign language requirements by studying Persian in small, lively classes taught by native speakers.
