Ten instructors are employed to teach courses in Basic Writing (Engl 100), English Composition and Rhetoric (Engl 101), College Algebra (Math 110), Precalculus Mathematics (Math 130), Selected Topics in Mathematics (Math 118), and General Descriptive Chemistry I (Chem 101). The program's staff includes ten tutors, a head counselor and other residential counselors who are Carolina students. Tutors provide tutorial assistance to individuals or small groups during designated study hours. Counselors coordinate weekend activities and ensure an appropriate curfew. The program's counselors and tutors possess records of academic success, a familiarity with the University, strong interpersonal skills, and a willingness to work with and act as positive role models for Summer Bridge students. Several social, cultural and recreational activities provide enriching and relaxation time. Participants, staff, and administrators come together on the program's first day for a welcome and introductory meeting. A reception is held for students, staff and faculty the night before classes begin. During the next seven weeks, the staff plans numerous activities for students. Students selected for the Bridge Program do not bear any cost to attend. The Summer Bridge Program pays for each student's room, board, tuition, and fees. The board plan includes a limited food allowance. The fees permit students to be treated at UNC Student Health Service.
