Guide to the Map Listing

Top line of each entry (on green background) gives map plate number, with single-page plate numbers enclosed by square brackets; map title; GNC/ONC/TPC/JOG base sheet number; and name of vicar (regional co-ordinator). Maps at 1:500,000 are asterisked. Otherwise the scale is 1:1,000,000, except for Maps #1-6 where it is 1:5,000,000, and Maps #43, 53, 59 where it is 1:150,000 (i.e. JOG enlarged by 166.7%).

Figures on second line are latitude (North), on third line longitude (East except where otherwise stated). Next to these co-ordinates are given name(s) of compiler(s) (on grey background). The following table entry illustrates the arrangement of information:

Map #: Map Name   Source Base(s) Vicar Name(s)
Bounding Rectangle Latitude (north)   Compiler Name(s)
Bounding Rectangle Longitude (default: east)   Comments & Inset Information

Apart from the special case of Map #1, maps measure approximately either 11.75 ins. (single page) or 24.5 (double spread) X 17, with the first or second of these three lengths forming the bottom except in instances where the map is marked as "(side)". Each map has four straight edges except where broken by the "bleeding" of a section into the margin. Each map is oriented due North, with the result that it covers a slightly wider area at the top than the co-ordinates given (based on the bottom) would indicate. On all 'side' maps North is to the left.

For elevation tints, see Key. Tinting scheme is uniform throughout. Note, however, that some maps at 1:1,000,000 scale may lack a 250 ft. contour, so that on these a single green tint covers 0-500 ft. There are no contours on maps at 1:5,000,000 scale.

Note further:

In the case of the Atlas map pages listed, printed copies of the following sheets are used to draw certain small areas manually. This avoids the expense of obtaining separations for the entire sheets.

Map 47: TPC G2C
Map 79: TPC H4C
Map 80: TPC J5B
Map 81: ONC J5 first edition (seps. no longer obtainable)
Map 95: ONC H7

All bases derived from JOG charts for Maps 43, 53, 59 are created manually (no separations available for civilian use).
