One of the significant strengths
of our location in the Research Triangle area is the wide population
diversity to which students are exposed during their clinical training.
While the majority of Triangle area residents are Caucasian or African
American, North Carolina also has the highest growth rate of Latinos
(primarily of Mexican heritage) in the country. In addition, counties
just outside the Triangle offer our students valuable experience
in consultation and clinical practice with rural residents from
different ethnic backgrounds. Our practicum sites offer experiences
in providing clinical services to ethnically and socioeconomically
diverse populations within the settings of campus counseling centers,
state psychiatric facilities, elementary and middle schools, and
medical facilities. Students and supervisors alike are routinely
surveyed for inclusion of diversity training and sensitivity to
issues of diversity within these experiences.
