Mathematics and Science Enrichment Activities for Students

This page links to information on various enrichment activities for students in Triangle-area schools. These are not CMSE activities, so we are not responsible for errors due to incorrect or outdated information. All the links on this page lead outside the CMSE site.

Carolina Summer
This three-week residential program in Chapel Hill is designed to give rising high school seniors a taste of the college academic experience. Students select 2 courses offered by outstanding UNC Chapel Hill faculty and benefit from an array of social, recreational, and cultural opportunities.
Duke Youth Programs
Among the Duke programs described on this site is Duke Action, a summer enrichment program for young women in middle school who are interested in science and would enjoy an intensive learning experience filled with discovery. Duke's well known TIP program has its own site (see below).
Health Professions Partnership Initiative (HPPI)
HPPI is a program of the UNC School of Medicine and various partners (including CMSE). The program encourages minority students to enter the health professions. Its lively home page has extensive information on health careers and the program's activities, including summer internship opportunities for students.
Morehead Planetarium Classes
The Planetarium has an active program of courses and activities both for teachers and for students. There is a small fee for most of these activities; Planetarium members receive a discount. Included in the list of activities is the Planetarium's popular summer day camp for upper elementary students, Starbase Morehead.
Museum of Life and Science Classes
The Museum has numerous special programs for students and sometimes offers workshops for teachers as well; these activities are listed in this online calendar of events.
North Carolina State Museum of Natural Sciences Classes
The Museum offers numerous programs for students. Registration information for upcoming programs is usually available on the Web.
NCSU Department of Chemistry Activities
The Department has an active program of activities for students at all grade levels.
The Science House
The Science House is the learning outreach center of the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, NC State University. It offers many student programs and a number of teacher workshops as well. Information on upcoming activities is usually available on the Web.
Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics (SVSM)
SVSM is a four-week, cost-free, state-funded program for academically talented rising juniors and seniors. Six campuses of the university system host the SVSM institutes, and the program is administered by the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. Application forms are available in high school counseling offices.
Talent Identification Program (TIP)
TIP is a program of Duke University. It's two best-known components are the Talent Search, which identifies academically talented seventh graders and offers them residential summer institutes at Duke; and the TIP Pre-College Program, which offers Duke undergraduate courses to qualified high school students.
Upward Bound
The UNC Chapel Hill Upward Bound program serves low-income and potential first generation college students from selected schools including Southern and Hillside High Schools in Durham; Chatham Central, Jordan-Matthews, and Northwood High Schools in Chatham County; Lee Senior High School in Lee County; and Orange and Chapel Hill High Schools in Orange County and Chapel Hill-Carrboro. The program includes Saturday and summer activities and requires continuing commitment throughout the high school years.
