Biology teachers, grades 9-12

Dates and Times:

  • July 7-11, 2008
  • 9:00-4:00 daily

Location:

NC School of Science & Mathematics, Durham

Credit:

3.0 units of license renewal credit

Fee:

  • $100/day ($500 total) for five days of instruction, including room and board; or
  • $75/day ($375 total) for five days of instruction, non-resident
  • these fees should be paid by school systems
  • thanks to a grant, fees are waived for low-performing schools

NC-MSEN Statewide Institute for Teaching Excellence:
SITE: 9-12 Biology

Institute Description:
This 5-day institute will focus on selected elements of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study in Biology. It will address critical areas recommended by the Department of Public instruction: content, misconceptions, and instructional strategies designed to assist in improving student achievement. Focus will also include imbedding literacy into instruction as well as use of concepts maps and other strategies for assessment purposes. The DPI-produced Biology support documents will be provided to all participants.

  • Module I: Energy and Matter in Living Systems: Respiration. Photosynthesis, Energy Transfer in the Ecosystem (including conservation of energy and conservation of matter)
  • Module II: Genetics and Evolution: Gene Regulation, Evolution and Adaptation (including unity and diversity of life)

  • Ms. Leslie Brinson, NC School of Science and Mathematics
