Statewide Institute for Teaching Excellence:
6-12 CARSAM
(Content
Area Reading in Science and Mathematics)
Institute Description:
This 5-day institute will focus on strategies for increasing
student learning in grades 6-12 by enabling them to cope more effectively
with required reading and writing. This is a hands-on institute; all
lessons will be applied directly to participants’ classroom textbooks
and other reading materials. Instruction will involve analyzing texts
participants use in their classrooms, designing lessons to help students
use those texts and other written materials more successfully, and providing
ways to use writing to enhance student learning. The examples used during
the institute will focus on the special needs inherent in science and
mathematics content reading, but the strategies are appropriate for any
classroom teacher.
Topics to be covered include but are not limited to:
- Before, during, and after comprehension strategies
- Principles of working with struggling readers
- Readability of texts and other written materials
- Writing strategies
- 5E lessons and metacognitive strategies
