NCTM Releases Principles
and Standards for School Mathematics
The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) has
released the completed Principles and Standards for School
Mathematics. This document, generally called Standards
2000, updates the previous national mathematics standards,
published in three parts beginning in 1989. The new standards
combine student, teaching, and assessment standards in a single
document. The entire document is available
online.
NCCTM Mini-Grants Available
Applications are due September 15 for the annual mini-grant
competition of the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
Grants can be used for math clubs, field days, contests, workshops
for parents, math activities, math laboratories, and other worthwhile
math curriculum support projects. $6000 is available for projects
in the Central Region. Information

NCDPI Schedules September Symposium
on the Mathematics Standards
Meredith College and the Mathematics Section of the NC Department
of Public Instruction are sponsoring a statewide symposium on
the new NCTM mathematics standards. The North Carolina Symposium
will be held at Meredith on September 23 and will include presentations,
discussion groups, and working sessions. Details
