Sitefinder Guide:
Top Triangle Science Sites

The Internet spans the globe, but for science teachers in our area some of the most useful sites are just a few miles away. In fact, we should be proud of the great Web resources being generated here in the Triangle area. Here are some of the best sites we've found.

Backyard Universe
Monthly astronomy columns and outstanding astronomical photography from Johnny Horne of the Fayetteville Observer Times. Horne's work has been published frequently in Sky and Telescope.
Carolina Health and Environment Community Center (CHECC)
This site, maintained by UNC Chapel Hill's Environmental Resource Program, provides background information on environmental science issues in North Carolina, such as pfiesteria and hog farms. It includes articles, excellent links, and access to discussion groups.
Classroom Weather
A new education service from the National Weather Service office at NCSU. Meteorologist Rod Gonski (a frequent presenter at CMSE programs) is posting useful and informative information here for teachers.
Cooperative Extension Service Educational Resources
Hundreds of bulletins, guides, and studies published by the NC Cooperative Extension Service are available online at this NC State University site. A gold mine of information.
Dictionary of Units of Measurement
A resource maintained by CMSE Director Russ Rowlett, with information on both traditional and metric measuerement systems.
Health Professions Partnership Initiative (HPPI)
HPPI is a program of the UNC School of Medicine and various partners (including CMSE). The program encourages minority students to enter the health professions. Its lively home page has extensive information on health careers and the program's activities.
J. C. Raulston Arboretum
The NC State arboretum's site has a gold mine of information about plants and horticulture, including a database of its 9000 plantings.
LEARN North Carolina
The UNC system's online support service for North Carolina educators in all subjects. Some of LEARN's resources are password-protected; check with your local technology coordinator to find out when your school will be "turned on" to the system. But many resources are public, including the complete Standard Course of Study and the links pages of LENI (Learners and Educators Network Information).
Morehead Planetarium
The Planetarium's site includes a Guide to the Universe, with articles on many astronomical topics; information on current events in the sky; astronomy and space exploration news; and links to other astronomy sites. There are also teacher's guides for Planetarium school shows and an archive of astronomy features published in the Chapel Hill Herald.
NCARS Weather and Climate Network
A bonanza of weather data from the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service at NC State University. Daily weather data is available for 14 sites in various parts of the state, including maximum and minimum temperatures, rainfall, average relative humidity, and average wind speed. There's enough here for dozens of class weather projects.
NC Geological Survey
The NC Geological Survey's new web site is loaded with useful information for earth science teachers.
North Carolina Association for Biomedical Research
NCABR's web site has information for teachers, students, and the public on the purpose, process, and benefits of biomedical research. A variety of teaching aids and professional development materials are available.
Pfiesteria piscicida Home Page
Dr. JoAnn Burkholder's lab at NC State maintains this informative site on the pfiesteria microorganism plaguing North Carolina's estuaries; it includes background on pfiesteria, numerous pictures, current research, and a page of current information on pfiesteria outbreaks in North Carolina. You can also read and download Burkholder's article, "Facts About Pfiesteria."
Poisonous Plants of North Carolina
Dr. Alice B. Russell and her colleagues at the NC State Department of Horticultural Science maintain this site. It's an encyclopedia of possible dangers in the plant world, covering both native and horticultural species. Indexed both by common name and by scientific name, the entries describe the plant, the danger, and the treatment.
Science Junction
A new site for science teachers and students maintained by NC State. Just starting up in the summer of 1998, Science Junction will include lesson plans, experiments, information on using technology, and many other features of interest to science teachers.
The Story in the Stone
This News and Observer feature story from Sunday, December 27, 1998, has excellent information on the geology and geologic history of the Triangle area.
A Triangle Naturalist's Almanac
Columns from the newsletter of the New Hope Audubon Society, nicely indexed by month and by organism. A wonderful place to learn more about our area's ecology.
WRAL Online Weather
Greg Fishel and his team provide the most complete weather information in the Triangle at this well-known site. In addition to forecasts, current weather data, and special features, the site includes Doppler 5000 radar updated every three minutes--a remarkable service.
