CHECC Out the Environment

UNC's Environmental Resource Program (ERP) has launched a brand-new site that promises to be a nerve center for North Carolinians interested in the environment. Supported by a grant from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, the Carolina Health and Environment Community Center (CHECC) describes itself as "a virtual center where individuals and community groups can find information about health and environmental issues and meet with each other to start projects, exchange ideas, and participate in lectures and classes."

ERP is a department of the UNC Chapel Hill School of Public Health. Founded in 1985, it promotes environmental stewardship and public health through education, applied research and community service

A key feature of the CHECC site is access to discussion groups, ten of them at present, concerned with issues such as hog waste, the coastal environment, and water quality. Another important resource is a comprehensive listing of environmental groups and organizations in the state.

The site is organized as a "campus" with three "buildings": Collaboration, Library, and Education. The Library contains a valuable collection of links to various environmental resources. The Education building isn't so well furnished yet, but there are plans to provide resources here that should prove quite helpful to teachers. We'll monitor this in coming months, and let you know how things are developing.

If you're teaching environmental science in any form, set a bookmark on CHECC and stay tuned!

Here's our featured site.
North Carolina Environmental Education Clearinghouse
This official site, maintained by the state's Office of Environmental Education, also has an excellent collection of information and links.
Conservation Council of North Carolina
CCNC is an umbrella organization for the state's environmental groups. It has a newly-redesigned web site fetauring weekly updates on environmental issues and the full text of CCNC's monthly newsletter Carolina Conservationist. Note, however: this is an activist site, not necessarily a scientific one.

FEEDBACK: We'd be happy to have your comments and suggestions.
