J. C. Raulston Arboretum

Known throughout the country as a pioneer and leader in horticulture, the J. C. Raulston Arboretum at NC State University also has one of the finest web sites of any botanical garden. If you're into plants, either at school or at home or both, this is a site for you to explore and enjoy.

Attractive and easily navigated, the site is also easy to find at its new URL, http://arb.ncsu.edu/. When you arrive, you'll be greeted by a picture of Dr. Raulston, who was killed in an auto accident December 21, 1996. The Arboretum is both his creation and his memorial.

The web site includes several major databases as well as a good deal of supporting information. Here are some of the resources you'll find:

• A database of plantings--the Arboretum boasts 9000 varieties collected;
• Descriptions and pictures of varieties, or cultivars as they are called, introduced by the Arboretum;
• The current Arboretum newsletter, available in both html and Adobe Acrobat formats;
• An archive of back issues of the Newsletter;
• The Arboretum's current calendar of activities and events;
• A photographic tour of the Arboretum; and
• A virtual reality tour of the proposed Arboretum Education Center.

The site is remarkably complete, informative, and easy to use--a delightful addition to the Triangle's Internet science resources.
