My research is in psycholinguistics. I have a particular concern with issues in the pragmatics of language use. I work on matters of communication by indirection, where a speaker seeks on the quiet to impose his or her assumptions on an audience (something exploited in certain sorts of humor); on the language of evaluation, especially of praise; and on issues related to the characterization of lying and the properties of lies.
