Submission Policy

The Carolina Quarterly welcomes unsolicited submissions of poetry, fiction, nonfiction, book reviews, and graphic art. Mail submissions to: The Carolina Quarterly, CB# 3520 Greenlaw Hall, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC 27599-3520.

The Carolina Quarterly does not accept e-mail submissions or computer files.

Mail one prose piece and/or one to six poems at a time (mail genres separately).  Poems should be typed either single- or double-spaced on one side of the page. Prose should be typed double-spaced on one side and be no longer than twenty-five pages. We have no preferences in regards to names in headers or footers, or to staples or paper clips. Although we look primarily for short stories, we occasionally publish personal essays and memoirs.  Novel excerpts are acceptable if self-contained.  Please do not send multiple submissions of the same genre, and do not send another manuscript until you hear about the first.  Include your full name and address on all envelopes. In general, address submissions to the "Fiction Editor" or the "Poetry Editor."

The Carolina Quarterly publishes cover art, as well as images of various kinds on its inner pages, including photographs, illustrations, and occasional cartoons.  Inner images are always black & white; cover images vary, but should be 4 1/2 x 3 inches or capable of being reduced to that size.  We accept unsolicited submissions, and welcome the opportunity to review samples.  Terms negotiable upon acceptance.  Query or submit to "Art Editor."

All manuscripts and correspondence regarding submissions should be accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope (S.A.S.E.) for a response; no replies will be given by e-mail or postcard. Expect four to six months for a decision.  We do not accept submissions during the summer months, May, June, July, and August.  We do not reprint previously published work, and we do not accept simultaneous submissions. Translations are welcome if permission for publication has been granted by the copyright holder. We assume no responsibility for delay, loss, or damage.  For more information about literary magazines, consult directories such as The Writer's Market and The International Directory of Literary Magazines and Small Presses.
