The Center has brought a number of distinguished southern scholars
to the University for the “Centering the South” series,
including Bertram Wyatt-Brown, John Edgerton, Houston Baker, Thadious
Davis, James Cobb, and Brian Ward. These scholars have leant their
expertise
Kudzu Ghost, from a lecture by
Derek Alderman
to thoughtful discussions about a wide range of topics indicative
of a quickly evolving South that nonetheless remains rooted in traditionalism. Themes range from “The Emotional
Stress of Confederate Defeat” to “Thinking Local, Acting
Global: Border and Places in the New Regionalism.”
Are you a University or visiting scholar with a strong interest
in Southern Studies? Whether your topic is Mississippi folk art
or the economic development of Appalachia, the Center would like
to hear from you. If you are interested in presenting a paper,
giving a talk, or developing a discussion topic for the Centering
the South lecture series, please contact Center Director Harry
Watson at 919.962.5665 or by email.
