The Center for Southern Folklore was founded in 1972 as a non-profit
organization dedicated to documenting and presenting the people
and traditions of the Memphis/Mid-South region. Under the leadership
of co-founder and Executive Director Judy Peiser, the Center has
developed award-winning media programs, events, publications and
festivals that have reached worldwide audiences.
The Center and its work has been featured on national and international
television, newspapers and magazines. As executive producer of
Center events like the Memphis Music & Heritage Festival, and
of award-winning film projects such as “All Day and All Night:
Memories of Beale Street Musicians,” Peiser has brought international
acclaim to the Center. She has received numerous awards including
the del Soul E Rhythm & Blues Award presented by the Sweet
Soul Music Festival in Porretta Italy, recognition by Esquire Magazine
for having changed America, and acknowledgement by Southern Living
Magazine for having made a difference in the changing South. She
also received the very first award for initiative from Women of
Achievement.
Peiser has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Illinois
at Champaign/Urbana and a Masters degree from the University of
Memphis. She is an award-winning filmmaker and a noted lecturer.
As a consultant to local, national and international media, Peiser
has helped make the Center the first stop for visitors to learn
about the culture, history, music, trials and triumphs of the entire
region.
