How to apply for a summer research grant

The next proposal deadline is March 21, 2008. Email applications to Reid Johnson at reidjohn@email.unc.edu. Awards will be announced in late April. Students will receive funding in May.

Proposals should include the following:

  1. A cover page with project title, applicant's name and academic rank, and name of home department.
  2. A double-spaced narrative of not more than 1,000 words describing the project, its guiding questions, and its relationship to existing scholarship. The narrative should also indicate the anticipated project completion date.
  3. A budget for use of the summer stipend. Note: Faculty may designate up to $1,000 of an award for research assistant wages.
  4. A curriculum vitae, not to exceed three pages.
  5. Graduate and professional students should ask the faculty advisor to submit a letter of support under separate cover. The advisor should assess the intellectual merit of the project and confirm that the student is currently enrolled and is expected to return next academic year in good standing.

How to apply for a faculty course development grant

The next proposal deadline is March 21, 2008. Email applications are preferred. Click here to apply by email. Awards will be announced in late April. Faculty will receive funding in June.

Please submit proposals (original and three copies) to the Center for the Study of the American South at the address below.

Proposals should include the following:

  1. A cover page with a proposal title, the applicant’s name and academic rank, and the name of the unit(s) in which applicant holds a faculty appointment.
  2. A narrative of no more than 1000 words that describes the new course and the contribution that it will make to broadening students’ understanding of the region. The narrative should also include some indication of when the new course will be scheduled and its expected enrollment.
  3. A budget for the use of the course development award.
  4. A curriculum vitae, not to exceed three pages.
  5. A brief supporting letter from the department chair, addressing the intellectual and educational merit of the proposed course and its place in the department or university curriculum.
