McColl Fellowships in Southern Studies

Every year, the McColl Fellowship in Southern Studies offers financial support to an outstanding first-year graduate student at UNC-CH, in a field related to the study of the American South. This one-year award is nonrenewable, but requires no teaching or research assistance activities from its recipients. The Fellowship provides an annual stipend, resident tuition, fees, and health insurance. Non-resident tuition costs must be shared with the sponsoring department. Nominations for the McColl Fellowship are made by departments; prospective students cannot apply directly for this fellowship but may indicate their interest when applying for admission. The annual deadline for application to the Graduate School is January 1.

Fields of Study
All doctoral degree programs at UNC-Chapel Hill that offer an emphasis in southern studies.

Eligibility
Entering doctoral students.

Selection
Departments, curricula, and schools may nominate a limited number of their most promising applicants into a university-wide competition. The next deadline for nominations is February 15. CSAS then selects a recipient and makes the fellowship offer in early March.
