Through the Southern Research
Circle, UNC graduate studentsand faculty from a variety of departments
gather together to discuss new research about the South and its people.
The SRC’s goal is to foster new understandings of the region and
a sensibility among researchers as to how their work can speak to broad
audiences outside their individual fields.
The Southern Research Circle has hosted dozens
of presentations from graduate students in such fields as anthropology,
art, English, and history. Led by Center director Harry Watson, the
forums are an opportunity for participants to present their ideas in
a friendly environment, and the free-flowing discussion that follows
gives researchers a chance to see the South from new perspectives.
The SRC sponsors
summer grants to support studies of regional life and culture. Membership
in the SRC is open to all graduate students and faculty at the University,
and the group welcomes new participants. If you have an interest in the
South and would enjoy interacting with some of the best new thinkers the
South has to offer, please contact
the Center office for more information.
The 2008 SRC UNC Interdisciplinary Conference for
Graduate Research on the American South will take place this spring on two Saturdays,
April 5 and April 19, in the Frank Porter Graham
Student Union on the UNC campus. Click
