Dr. Burby teaches courses in land use and environmental planning, development impact assessment, sustainable cities, hazard mitigation and research methods.   He is the Director of Undergraduate Studies and the Coordinator of the Minor in Urban Studies and Planning.

Research and Practice

Dr. Burby is a fellow of American Institute of Certified Planners and is a member of numerous professional organizations. He is a former co-editor of the Journal of the American Planning Association. He has been an author or editor on 14 books and published extensively in planning and policy journals including, among others, Journal of the American Planning Association, Journal of Planning Education and Research, Journal of Policy Analysis and Management, Land Economics, Environmental Management, and Journal of Environmental Planning and Management. He has received many research grants and is currently principal investigator on a study of citizen participation in planning funded by the National Science Foundation as well as co-pi on an NSF-funded study of risk and planning behaviors associated with combined natural and technological disasters.
