AFSA/AAFSW Announce 2002 Merit Award Winners

Cosponsored by the American Foreign Service Association (AFSA) Scholarship Fund and the Associates of the American Foreign Service Worldwide (AAFSW), 25 high school seniors have won this year's student merit awards with a value of $28,000.  Winners receive $1,500 awards and Honorable Mention winners receive $500 awards.  Seventy-one Academic Merit applicants and 21 Art Merit applicants competed this year.  They were judged by individuals from the Foreign Service community.

Students compete on grade point average, Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) scores, two- page essays, letters of recommendation, extra-curricular activities, and any special circumstances.  They may also submit an art entry in one of the following categories:  visual arts, musical arts, drama, dance or creative writing.

Since the 2001 program, two special awards are given in the names of John and Priscilla Becker and Donald S. and Maria Giuseppa Spigler for their perpetual scholarship donations.  Amanda Eckerson will receive the Becker award and Jessica Stallings will receive the Spigler award as the highest scoring students in the competition.  For more information on the program, contact Lori Dec at AFSA, 202-944-5504 - ph, dec@afsa.org - email, or go to www.afsa.org.
