Students awarded for WQTC presentations

Two students received awards for their papers and associated presentations at the Water Quality Technology Conference in Quebec City this month.

Treavor Boyer, a PhD candidate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Norma J. Ruecker, a master's candidate at the University of Calgary, were recognized for their papers during the conference.

Boyer, whose advisor is Phillip C. Singer, authored "Continuous-Flow Pilot-Scale Testing of a Magnetic Ion-Exchange Resin for Removal of Disinfection By-product Precursors." Ruecker's paper was titled "Identifying Host-Adapted Cryptosporidium Species and Genotypes in Water." Her advisor is Norman F. Neumann.

Awards given at WQTC, membrane conference

New this year, the awards are conferred at the WQTC and the Membrane Technology Conference. The winners each receive $1,000 in addition to a commemorative plaque.

Students whose papers are selected for the membrane or water quality conference programs through the appropriate call for papers can request to compete for the award. They must be full-time students at the time of the call for papers and present their paper in person. The paper can be presented orally or as a poster.

The call-for-paper deadlines usually fall about eight to nine months before the conference and are announced on the AWWA Web site under Conferences.
