Course Descriptions

Composition 100
10th Grade
This course will emphasize skill building necessary for writing expository prose. The course will include review of basic rules of grammar, punctuation, writing sentences, paragraphs and essays and reading and vocabulary skill building.
Composition 110
11th Grade
This course will focus on the study of select writings from American and British authors. Specific focus is placed on essay writing, critical thinking, vocabulary, reading and study skill enhancement.
Introductory Biology
10th Grade
This introductory course explores topics such as: The meaning of Life and Animal Kingdoms. Laboratory usage and visits to the UNC-CH Medical School are supplement classroom instruction. The course will also utilize educational computer software and the internet as a part of academic instruction.
Advanced Biology
11th and 12th Grades
This course will cover topics such as: Genetics, Embryology, Cell Biology and Anatomy. The laboratory and the internet will be utilized. A visit to the Anatomy Lab in the Medical School is an integral part of this course.
Introduction to Chemistry
11th Grade
This introductory Chemistry course includes topics such as: Matter and energy, measurements, the periodic chart and basic laws of Chemistry. Laboratory activities are included and use of the internet/educational software.
Physics
11th and 12th Grade
This introductory course will include the study of metric and English measurements, vectors, and motion. Laboratory activities are included in this course.
Spanish/Culture
10th Grade
This course will provide students with a view of the Hispanic/Latino world and culture. It will focus on history, language, governmental and social systems, values, practices, and customs. Student complete projects on select countries in the Hispanic world. An International Day Celebration is planned by the class.
Conversational Spanish
11th and 12th Grade
This course will introduce students to Spanish language and culture. Students are expected to describe people, places and things in Spanish; recognize words and phrases, and participate in dialog. Students are expected to complete individual projects and order from a menu that is written in Spanish.
Conversational French
10th – 12th Graders
This course will introduce students to French language and culture. Students are expected to describe people, places, and things in French; recognize words and phrases, and participate in dialog, read and translate passages. Students are expected to complete individual projects and order food from a menu that is written in French.
Integrated Mathematics
10th Grade
Integrated Mathematics provides students with the opportunity to study traditional topics from Algebra, probability, and statistics in a problem-centered, connected approach. Calculators and application of software will utilized in classroom instruction.
Algebra II
11th Grade
Algebra II continues students’ study of advanced algebraic concepts including functions, polynomials, rational expressions, complex numbers, systems of equations and inequalities, and matrices. Focus will be place on practical application. Appropriate technology, including calculators and application software will be used in this class.
Geometry
10th Grade
This Geometry class will move students from an inductive approach to deductive methods of proof in their study of geometric figures. Two-and-three dimensional reasoning skills will be emphasized and students will broaden their use of the coordinate plane it include transformations of geometric figures. Calculators and graphics software will be use in this class.
Advanced Mathematics/
Pre Calculus/ Calculus

10th –12th Grade
Advanced Mathematics provides students a complete study of trigonometry, as well as advanced algebra topics, analytic geometry, sequences and series, and data analysis. Practical application will be used throughout this course.
Computer Technology I
10th –12th Grade
Computer Technology I will focus on keyboarding, word processing, e-mail, internet and telecommunication in preparing classroom assignments and projects.
Computer Technology II
10th –12th Grade
Computer Technology II will focus on Desk Top Publishing, Databases, spreadsheets and telecommunication in preparing classroom assignments and projects and general communication.
Computer Technology III
10th - 12th Grade
Computer Technology III will focus on Web design. Students are to prepare a web page with links. They are to update the Upward Bound Website.
United States History/A
Melting Pot Experience

10th –11th Grade
This course will focus on questions regarding: who we are as people, why we make the decisions that we make, the consequences or our economic, political, social and religious actions and behaviors, contributions to society, and the value of diversity in our society.
The Upward Bound Readers Club Curriculum The purpose of this club is to provide exploration into reading novels, which will enhance students vocabulary, communication, and writing skills while encouraging them to develop an enthusiasm to read. The club will target students having an interest in reading. It will be held during the Saturday Enrichment Academy and Summer Residential Program. Students will be responsible for selecting and reading a number of pre-approved novels in which they will write summaries, and discuss and debate issues. Students will relate issues found in the novel to current day situations.
