Dear Applicant:

The Upward Bound Program at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is a federally funded educational program which prepares high school students for post secondary education. If you are interested in preparing for college, complete the application.

The following instructions must be followed to complete the application process:

  1. Complete the entire application by supplying the data as outlined.
  2. Please be sure to complete and sign Section VI (Family’s Annual Income).
  3. Submit a copy of your child’s test scores if completing the eighth grade and high school transcript, report card at the end of the fall semester.
  4. Sign a Release of Information Form so that your schools guidance department will release a copy of your grades and test scores to the Upward Bound Program.
  5. Submit two (2) letters of recommendation: one (1) from an academic teacher and one (1) from your high school counselor and a 250-300-word essay.
  6. Return the completed application to the Upward Bound High School Coordinator at your school.

Ultimately, Upward Bound is designed to generate in program participants skills and motivation necessary to complete a program of study that leads to a college degree.

Recruitment season begins for Upward Bound during the spring semester for 8th graders and during the academic year for 9th and 10th grade students. Student must be 9th or 10th grade at the time of admission to the program. Required minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) is 2.0.

PRIVACY ACT STATEMENT:
The personal information that you give to the Upward Bound Director is sent to the federal government (Department of Education). The information is protected by the Privacy Act. No one may see the information unless they work with or for the Upward Bound Program or are specifically authorized to see the information. The information is necessary to determine if you are eligible to participate in the program and helps the government to measure your success. The Department of Education has the authority to gather information the help make Upward Bound a better program (20 USC 1231a).
