Student
Selection
The
program
serves
90 high
school
students,
primarily
from
low
income
and
potential
first
generation
college
student
homes.
Students
who
meet
the
following
criteria
may
apply
to Upward
Bound:
-
Attend
target
schools
in
Chatham,
Durham,
Lee
and
Orange
counties.
Students
currently
enrolled
in
Chapel
Hill
or
Carrboro
are
also
served.
Target
schools
include:
Chatham
Central
High
School,
Jordan
Matthews
High
School,
Lee
County
Senior
High
School,
Northwood
High
School,
Orange
High
School,
and
Southern
High
School.

federal
guidelines,
based
on
income
and/or
educational
background
of
parents
- Have
a
need
for
academic
support
-
Be
a
citizen
of
the
United
States
Upward
Bound
participants
are
selected
based
on a
critical
review
of the
student
application
and
supporting
documents
by the
Upward
Bound
director
and
staff.
The
process
includes:

Reviewing
the
student
application
and
essay
-
Assessing
teacher
and
counselor
comments
and
recommendations
-
Analyzing
of
high
school
and
junior
high
school
transcript
-
Assessing
standardized
test
data
-
Interviewing
the
student
and
parent
or
guardian
-
Analyzing
recommendations
from
students
and
community
resource
persons
