Scholarship
The
Ernest
H. Dark,
Sr.
Upward
Bound
Scholarship
Award
is presented
annually
to a
graduate
of the
Upward
Bound
Program
with
outstanding
scholarship,
service,
citizenship
and
leadership.
The
recipient
must
have
participated
in Upward
Bound
for
at least
two
full
years
with
good
attendance
and
must
exemplify
good
character.
Additionally,
the
recipient
must
participate
in the
UNC-CH
Bridge
Program
and
enroll
in college
for
the
fall
semester
of the
year
of high
school
graduation.
The
amount
of the
scholarship
is from
$500.00
to $1,000.00
annually.
Mr.
Ernest
H. Dark,
Sr.
served
the
State
of North
Carolina
as an
educator
for
over
40 years
and
Upward
Bound
for
33 years.
He is
a retired
mathematics
classroom
teacher
and
high
school
coach.
Ernest
devoted
his
years
of service
unselfishly
to helping
youth
reach
their
fullest
potential.
He is
delighted
in students
learning,
growing
in wholesome
ways,
and
going
to college.
The
Ernest
H. Dark
Scholarship
Award
recipient
is expected
to graduate
from
college
and
to make
a positive
difference
in the
world.

Scholarship
The
Order
of the
Golden
Fleece
at The
University
of North
Carolina
at Chapel
Hill
established
an endowment
fund,
“The
Allard
K. Lowenstein
Scholarship
Fund”
for
the
purpose
of “granting
scholarship
awards
to students
attending
the
University
of North
Carolina
at Chapel
Hill
with
preference
to students
who
have
participated
in the
Upward
Bound
Program.”
The
award
is based
on the
students
potential
for
contributions
to the
University
through
academics,
athletics,
and
activities
as judged
by performance
in high
school
and
the
community.”
The
recipient
of the
annual
scholarship
will
be selected
by the
University’s
Committee
on Scholarships,
Awards
and
Student
Aid
with
recommendations
from
staff
and
counselors.
Allard
K. Loweinstein,
a 1949
graduate
of the
University
of North
Carolina
at Chapel
Hill
was
a champion
of Human
and
Civil
Rights.
He received
his
law
degree
from
Yale
University
Law
School
in 1953.
He was
a crusade
for
justice
on the
national
and
international
levels
until
his
death
in 1980.
For
example,
Lowenstein
was
involved
in the
freedom
struggles
in Mississippi
and
South
Africa.
He had
an abiding
faith
in the
reform
spirit
of young
people.
Loweinstein’s
emphasis
on equity,
access,
opportunity
and
education
are
also
the
cornerstones
of Upward
Bound.
The
award
serves
as both
an incentive
for
Upward
Bound
students
to excel
and
a reward
for
scholarly
achievements.
