Allard K. Loweinstein Scholarship

The Order of the Golden Fleece at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill established an endowment fund, “The Allard K. Lowenstein Scholarship Fund” for the purpose of “granting scholarship awards to students attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with preference to students who have participated in the Upward Bound Program.” The award is based on the students potential for contributions to the University through academics, athletics, and activities as judged by performance in high school and the community.” The recipient of the annual scholarship will be selected by the University’s Committee on Scholarships, Awards and Student Aid with recommendations from staff and counselors.

Allard K. Loweinstein, a 1949 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was a champion of Human and Civil Rights. He received his law degree from Yale University Law School in 1953. He was a crusade for justice on the national and international levels until his death in 1980. For example, Lowenstein was involved in the freedom struggles in Mississippi and South Africa. He had an abiding faith in the reform spirit of young people. Loweinstein’s emphasis on equity, access, opportunity and education are also the cornerstones of Upward Bound. The award serves as both an incentive for Upward Bound students to excel and a reward for scholarly achievements.
