*Important Note: This Placement Exam is given one time per academic year, on the day before classes begin for the Fall semester. Make-up exams will be not be administered for any reason.

The Placement Exam offered by the UNC Writing Program assesses students' writing ability. The exam is recommended for the following groups of students:

Exam Description: The Placement Exam requires that you write an essay analyzing a short article. You will be asked to make an argument about the effectiveness of the article's organization, use of evidence, and rhetorical style. There will be no questions about grammar or usage; your understanding of these matters will be evident in your response to the exam question.

Registration: To register for the exam, print out the registration form (.doc file) and fill in your information. Bring the completed registration page and a picture ID to the Lenior side of Greenlaw Hall at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, August 18th. You will present your registration page and be immediately assigned to a testing room.

Placement Results: Essays will be graded by a committee of composition instructors. Placement results will be posted online Wednesday, August 20th. Exam results will NOT be given out over the phone or sent via email.

Checklist

  1. Show up on the Lenoir side of Greenlaw by 8:45 am.
  2. Bring the following:
    • A printed, completed copy of the registration form
    • A picture ID (UNC One Card preferred)
    • Two ink pens (blue or black ink only)
