M.A. Requirements

The M.A. in English requires thirty semester hours of course work, demonstration of proficiency in one foreign language, and a thesis. Three of the thirty hours are satisfied by the thesis (English 393). A course in rhetoric and the teaching of composition (English 131) and an English language course (English136, 137, 238, 250, a graduate course in linguistics, a course in the theory of language, or a course in the philosophy of language) satisfy six more hours. Of the remaining twenty-one hours, nine must be taken from a set of Pro-Seminars which introduce students to advanced, professional work in a specific field of English literature. At the end of their first year, students submit to the Director of Graduate Studies at least two 18-25 page research papers written in their Pro-Seminars or in Ph.D. level courses, one of which will be revised over the summer and submitted as the thesis. Students will subsequently discuss their approved thesis with a committee of three faculty members. Graduate-level courses may also be taken for credit at the following institutions: North Carolina State University, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, North Carolina Central University, and Duke University.
