Ph.D. Requirements
No specific number of hours of course work is prescribed for the Ph.D. degree. However, the Graduate School has a residency requirement, which is ordinarily satisfied by four semesters of full-time registration. Students normally complete course work with sixteen to eighteen graduate courses beyond the B.A. The following are required: two seminars in the major and one seminar in the minor. Candidates for the Ph.D. must pass three Departmental examinations: a written examination on the major and minor; an oral examination on the major, minor, and a specialized research field; and an oral defense of the completed dissertation. Students must show proficiency in two foreign languages, of which one may be the language used for the M.A.
